Mexico, one of the poorest developing nations, has a new
distinction--home to the richest man in the world.Carlos Slim Helu has
been named on the annual Forbes billionaire list as the richest man in
the world, putting Bill Gates in second, with Warren Buffett coming in
third.Helu's shares of Slim's telecommunications is said to be worth
$53.5 billion.According to Forbes, Bill Gates has slipped into second
place after being in the first position for over 14 of the last 15
years.Forbes announced that Gate's current fortune is $53 billion, a
half a billion less than Carlos Slim Helu. The news from Forbes didn't
impress everyone in Mexico. According to that country's government,
almost have the population of 170 million people live below the
poverty level."This is shameful," said Ernesto Villanueva, a resident
of Mexico City. He told the Associated Press. "This is part of what is
wrong with the Mexican political system and the corruption in the
circles of power that allow there to be a few rich people and millions
of poor."Helu and his organization remained unscathed by the criticism
and brushed off the Forbes announcement saying it was just numbers in
a magazine.Helu bought the telephone company Telmex in 1990 and
transformed the company into America Movil.
